Why Do My Feet Sweat So Much?
Posted on Dec 14, 2020

Excess sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be a frustrating condition, primarily when it affects your ease of finding and wearing comfortable footwear. Let’s look at why your feet may be sweating and what easy solutions you can add to your daily routine to help fight the problem.

WHAT IS CAUSING MY FEET TO SWEAT?

Hyperhidrosis can affect any age and any gender. Unfortunately, researchers have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of this condition. For many, excess sweating can affect the feet, underarms, palms, back, and more – is a genetically inherited trait, though other needs or lifestyles can exacerbate it.

While you may not be able to determine the root cause of your excess sweating, there are several steps you can take at home – with minimal effort – to keep your feet cool and dry. This condition is medically treatable, too. Seek a professional opinion as well!

HOW CAN I PREVENT FOOT SWEAT?

Stopping the sweat might be a lot easier than you might think! Make these simple tips a part of your everyday routine to cut down on the dampness.

1. Hydrate!

It should go without saying that drinking plenty of water is essential to your health and wellbeing. This goes for the entire body. Drinking water helps to hydrate the tissues of your body and regulate body temperature. By keeping your system cool and under control, you can lower the chances of sweating.

Proper hydration allows for the appropriate function of your body’s systems. This includes the autonomic nervous system. This particular system regulates sweating.

2. Wear breathable footwear.

Your socks and shoes can play a massive part in what is causing your feet to sweat. Cotton socks are lightweight and allow for plenty of airflow to the foot while still protecting your feet. Moisture-wicking socks are also a great option! It is a good idea to change socks at least twice during the day, as well.

For footwear, look for breathable leather or canvas fabrics, make sure that you are wearing the right size for your foot, and consider open-toed footwear to allow ample ventilation for your feet. Ensure that the fit of the shoe is good and that it does not become too tight with the addition of your average socks.

3. Wash your feet daily.

Personal hygiene is another critical factor of the day. Washing your feet a minimum of once daily washes away bacteria, fungus, and sweat that can make your feet sweaty and smelly. Wash with warm water and an antifungal soap, let dry thoroughly, and then finish with our next point…

4. Use antiperspirant.

Yes, you read that right. Antiperspirant isn’t just for your armpits, after all!

Applying a deodorant that helps explicitly to block the sweat glands in the feet can help to keep your sole nice and dry. Finish your day off with a shower before bed, at least for your feet. Then, apply a swipe of antiperspirant to your feet and head to sleep. In the morning, you can wash this off and go on with your day!

For best results, do this at least three days in a row. After that, you can do this once per week for dry feet.

While these tips can help with general foot sweat, it is essential to notice when your feet may be sweating an excessive amount. If this is the case, or if these tips do not help control the moisture, consider talking with your physician to find the right solution.
