5 Signs You’re Experiencing Brain Fog
Posted on Feb 06, 2021

Brain fog may not sound like a serious health issue to most, but it can be a symptom that can drastically impact your life if left untreated.

Make sure you know the symptoms, the causes, and how you can fight brain fog before it becomes a problem.

WHAT EXACTLY IS BRAIN FOG?

Brain fog is loosely defined by the following:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty in processing thoughts
  • Easily distracted
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • A general feeling of “being in a fog”

Many may find these to be familiar symptoms, especially during the strange, new lifestyle changes that COVID-19 has ushered in.

However, this is not just a state of mind. Brain fog comes from very real catalysts.

WHAT IS CAUSING YOUR BRAIN FOG?

Not Getting Enough Sleep or Hydration

Sleep impacts more areas of the body than you may realize.

Maintaining a proper sleep routine helps reset your body and helps your brain’s neurons to properly function and communicate.

A lack of sleep, especially long periods of sleep deprivation, can negatively affect your memory, response times, and energy level.

After all, remember that sleep deprivation is a well-known form of torture.

Hydration is mandatory for proper function of your central processing unit. Hydration is mandatory for your brain.

Without enough hydration, nothing works right and this is especially true of cognition. This is why IV hydration is so amazing and popular.

With enough hydration, all systems in the body work better. However, the brain is especially sensitive to a lack of fluids and the components of water. So drink your water!

Medications

Certain medications are known to cause brain fog in some users.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications include sleep aids, antihistamines, high blood pressure medication, etc.

The most common reason for many issues after injury and trauma is medication side-effects.

Always make sure to read the medical information included with any medication.

If you feel like your brain fog is related to a medication you are taking, speak with your health care professional for further assistance.

Most pain medications cause reduced ability to think, react and function mentally.

Underlying Conditions

A number of underlying conditions may be the cause behind the brain fog you are experiencing. Some of these conditions include fibromyalgia, migraines, bipolar disorder, lupus, depression, and many more.

Brain fog can even be a symptom of past brain trauma – like a concussion – that has the potential to develop into memory loss or more serious cognitive impairment.

Imbalanced Hormones

Hormonal imbalances such as a thyroid imbalance or menopause are known to cause forgetfulness and fatigue that can be categorized as brain fog.

These conditions are more commonly seen in older women but are not exclusive to that population.

As we age less growth hormone, testosterone and other vital hormones are produced.

All of this has effects not just on muscle mass, fat levels, skin appearance and bone health, but will also affect cognition.

Nutritional Deficiency

Brain fog can be caused by some nutritional deficiencies.

Some included are iron deficiency, folic acid deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, magnesium deficiency, and etc.

Nutritional deficiencies may cause brain fog due to reducing the body’s ability to maintain full and proper brain function due to low levels of certain nutrients.

There are many vital amino acids, nutrients, minerals and phytochemicals that allow for proper function of the mitochondria and the neurons.

This can sometimes be the most difficult cause of brain fog to determine but also one of the most powerful ways to combat it.
