Why Professional Athletes Are Supplementing With PEA
Posted on Mar 24, 2021

At Well Theory, we formulate products with CBD and PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide) for their powerfully anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

We have incorporated PEA and CBD into our products since the beginning and strongly believe in the power of these natural molecules.

They work similarly within the body to naturally reduce inflammation by blocking your body’s overactive inflammatory response.

But, how do you know which one to choose?

Here’s why some professional athletes use PEA as a CBD alternative.

FIRST, WHAT IS PEA?

PEA, or Palmitoylethanolamide, is a simple fatty acid compound.

Your body naturally produces this in response to stress, pain, and inflammation to help promote relief, healing, and balance.

Much like CBD, it works on your body’s endocannabinoid or regulatory system.

This means that it relieves pain and inflammation by interrupting the inflammatory response before it has a chance to fully register.

CBD and PEA are what are known as cannabinoids or endocannabinoid-like-substances -

This means they’re classified as a type of chemical compound that interacts with the receptors of the body’s endocannabinoid system.

Your body naturally produces cannabinoids, like PEA, that interact with these receptors - and the receptors can be found in any part of your body, including your brain.

PEA preferentially acts on PPARs (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors).

The main receptors that CBD and PEA work on are CB1, CB2, and PPARs.

CB1 receptors are located mainly in the nervous system, brain, and spinal cord, and CB2 receptors are mainly responsible for digestive and immune system function.

PPARs are found in the liver, heart, skeletal muscle and are involved in fatty acid metabolism. PPARs are important for regulating energy expenditure.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD & PEA?

CBD is a plant-based cannabinoid that does not occur naturally in your body.

However, this phytochemical links perfectly to our self-made endocannabinoid receptors.

While it is very similar to PEA, only PEA occurs naturally within your body.

They are both anti-inflammatory and have even been shown to have neuroprotective qualities.

PEA is a very safe, well-studied, and accepted anti-inflammatory.

Because it is a human molecule and naturally made in the body, it has none of the controversy of cannabidiol which is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant.

As you age, your body’s production of PEA may decrease - but thankfully, it is possible to supplement your PEA intake.

Our Essential Multivitamin is formulated with clinical-grade essential vitamins and minerals, plus 150 MG of PEA for added anti-inflammatory support.

WHY ATHLETES CHOOSE PEA

CBD has become well-known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-fighting) properties.

However, sometimes an alternative is necessary.

Professional athletes that have to submit regular drug tests choose PEA over CBD because certain CBD products may contain trace amounts of THC.

CBD made from industrial hemp will never have enough THC to matter, but often products are made with adulterants.

Since your body naturally produces PEA in response to pain, stress, and inflammation to combat their effects, athletes also choose PEA to enhance their exercise performance and recovery.

We believe that everyone should enjoy optimal health, not just athletes and celebrities.

Well Theory has been bringing the natural power and wonder of PEA to our community for a long time, and we love the results!
